What is Hyvä exactly?

Hyvä is a frontend specifically developed for Magento 2. It’s not based on the Magento standard themes Luma or Blank. Instead, it’s been entirely rebuilt from scratch to enable a high-performing and flexible frontend using modern technologies.

What does this peculiar name actually mean?

Hyvä is Finnish and roughly translates to “good”, “great”, or “excellent”. And that’s exactly what it is: a brilliant frontend for Magento 2, coupled with an extremely memorable name.

What makes Hyvä better than the Magento standard theme?

The Magento standard theme is a highly complex and comprehensive theme that comes with many functions and features. This is beneficial as it’s meant to serve as a base for various types of shops. However, therein lies the problem: its complexity and heaviness. This often makes it challenging to understand and customize the theme. Additionally, it’s not particularly performance-oriented, carrying many functions that aren’t needed in most cases.

Here’s where Hyvä steps in: it’s a sleek, high-performing, and flexible frontend that focuses on the essentials, making customization straightforward. Simultaneously, it’s technologically based on modern technologies like Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS, which makes developing Hyvä projects a genuine pleasure. In contrast, Magento relies on Knockout.js, RequireJS and Less, which, in our opinion, is no longer contemporary.

Why should I use Hyvä?

In our first Hyvä project, we experienced that Core Web Vital scores of nearly 100 points are suddenly achievable. This is a real breakthrough, because it’s nearly impossible with the Magento standard theme. And you can feel the difference as soon as you visit a Hyvä shop: It’s incredibly fast and responds instantly to any interactions. This is a true game-changer as loading time is a crucial factor for the success of an online store.

Does Hyvä support Adobe Commerce?

In general, Hyvä works with all Magento 2 versions. But if you’re using Commerce features, you might need to include the additional Hyvä Enterprise package, which costs an extra fee. This package supports most of the Commerce features, although not all of them yet. Compatibility with existing Magento extensions

As Hyvä is a completely new frontend, it’s not compatible with all existing Magento extensions by default. A module, which only adds backend or functionality changes, will most likely work out of the box. But all modules, which add frontend changes, might need to be adapted to work with Hyvä. The issue here is, that Hyvä uses a completely different approach to render the frontend, which is not compatible with the Magento standard theme. To fix that problem, a compatibility module is needed, which adapts the frontend changes of the existing module to work with Hyvä. Hyvä provides special layout handles, which can be used to add the necessary changes to the frontend. There are already a lot of compatibility modules available for existing Magento extensions, which can be found in the Hyvä GitLab. Additionally, many modules from smaller and bigger vendors are already compatible out of the box. In our eyes, the question if a module is compatible with Hyvä will be a crucial factor in the future, when choosing a Magento extension. So if you are a Magento extension developer, we highly recommend you to add a compatibility module for Hyvä to your extension and we will be happy to do it for you or help you with it.

Hyvä Checkout

Hyvä Checkout is a new checkout solution for Magento 2, which is built on top of Hyvä. It’s a completely new checkout, which is not based on the Magento 2 checkout. It’s a lot faster and a lot easier to develop with than the Magento 2 checkout. For example, some tests show 13 times faster load time on mobile devices, compared to standard Magento checkout! It is compatible with a wide range of payment and shipping providers.

Hyvä Enterprise

Hyvä Enterprise is an additional paid product, which is needed to use Hyvä with Adobe Commerce. It is built on top of Hyvä Themes and adds support for most of the Commerce features. It is not needed for the Community Edition of Magento 2. A complete overview of all supported features can be found in the Hyvä Enterprise Feature Matrix.

Hyvä UI

Hyvä UI is a new UI library for Magento 2, which can be used to easily build shops fast and efficiently with Hyvä. It includes a lot of prebuilt components, which can be included directly into your Hyvä project. That way, you can build a shop with Hyvä UI in a fraction of the time it would take to build it from scratch. For example, there are several compontents for headers, menus, footer, banners or CMS content. A complete overview of all available components can be found in the Component Overview PDF.

What does Hyvä cost?

Hyvä Themes: 1000 € one-time fee
Hyvä Checkout: 1000 € one-time fee + 250 € per year for updates and support
Hyvä Enterprise: 2500 € per year
Hyvä UI: included in Hyvä Themes

Which alternatives exist for Hyvä?

Of course there are other alternatives to Hyvä, which are in our eyes not as good as Hyvä, but still worth mentioning. A good overview can also be found at our friends from Mage-OS.

Luma-based themes

When Performance is not a priority, this can of course be an option. But in our eyes, e-commerce is all about performance, so we would not recommend this.

Headless solutions

There are a lot of headless solutions available, which are all based on the Magento 2 API. The most known are surely PWA Studio and Vue Storefront, but there are many more. All of them require a lot of development effort and are not as easy to customize as Hyvä. Additionally, the performance is not as good as with Hyvä.

Breeze

The approach is similar to Hyvä. The idea is to replace the JS framework of the Magento standard theme with a modern one. But as it is not as popular as Hyvä, it will be a lot more difficult to implement and provide compatibility with existing Magento extensions.
